“When we treat children’s play as seriously as it deserves, we are helping them feel the joy that’s to be found in the creative spirit. It’s the things we play with and the people who help us play that make a great difference in our lives.” Fred Rogers

I grew up (many, many moons ago) in the east part of San Diego County.  I like to think there is intelligent life inland of the 805 freeway!  My brother and I laugh about playing tag with all of our neighborhood friends and the boundaries were “Lakeside”.  My mother thought if you came inside the house before the streetlights went on, you must be sick!  I am the last of 5 children who grew up in a close and large extended family, always within a stone’s throw of our grandparents.  Any holiday gathering seems light if we have less than 40 people.

I have been working in the service of children and families for more than 40 years, and I cannot imagine any other career that would make my heart sing every day.  I originally earned a 2-year degree in (yikes!) “Nursery School Education” and went on to complete a BS degree in Early Childhood Education.  My first job was working with a group of 24 two-year-olds all by myself all day.  I have come to learn that what I was hired to do was actually illegal, but what did I know at 18? After more than 20 years as a classroom teacher working with infants-Kindergarten, I have spent the latest years in Administration.  I will first and always think of myself as a teacher.

When not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, friends and family.  I am a voracious reader usually reading at least one book and listening to another in my car to and from work.  I like camping and spending time in nature.  I love to cook when I have lots of uninterrupted time, and casual dinner parties with those I love comes close to heaven on earth for me.  I am also a non-denominational minister and in my “spare time” I enjoy writing custom ceremonies for people who are getting married.  None of the “Princess Bride” weddings — just the ones that are from the heart.

I serve on two early childhood education boards outside of the SDSU Children’s Center, and am a certified trainer in California’s Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) assessment process as well as the Infant/Toddler/Preschool Environment Rating Scales.  Both of these tools help teachers plan meaningful activities for children in an environment that respects and supports their learning styles.

Working on the SDSU campus is such an amazing opportunity.  The population of the Children’s Center mirrors the extreme diversity we see all around us.  It is my hope that children growing up together with so many other cultures will understand that the world is big and peace is possible.  I look forward to getting to know all of the children and families we serve.
