Supervising Teacher

Lorilyn Lord

My passion is working with young children and their families. I have been a teacher at the Children’s Center since 1998. This is my story.

My journey in early childhood education began years ago when I needed to return to fulltime work but did not want to be away from my two children, who were only two and three years old. I felt lucky to find a job in a commercial childcare center where I could be in the same building as my children. It was here that I found my calling: working with young children and their families. I became inspired by a preschool teacher at the center who became my friend and encouraged me to enroll in Community College of Southern Nevada where I eventually earned an AA degree in Early Childhood Education. My education opened the door for me to get a position at a childcare center on a military base where I had the opportunity to work with the children of those serving our country. When we moved to San Diego in 1996 I was able to continue on my early childhood education journey and become a fulltime student at SDSU and work part-time for Associated Students at the Campus Children’s Center. A fulltime position opened up at the Children’s Center just as I graduated and I was delighted to be chosen for it.

One of the things I love about the Children’s Center is working with a wonderfully diverse group of people. Another thing I truly enjoy is working with students and sharing their journeys. I have been a California Mentor Teacher since 2005.

Through Program for Infant/Toddler Caregivers (PITC) Training for Trainers, I learned about Continuity of Care, where teachers stay with children through at least the first three years of life. I am privileged to be the first Supervising teacher to work with a core group of children and their families from Infants to Preschool.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading and love to go sailing with my husband.
